We suggest that you bookmark this page and study it. These are the steps that many Producer/Engineers take when composing, recording, mixing, and mastering a track. [Note: Any thing underlined below is very important and were places that had us ‘stuck’ when learning this process.
Composing or producing beats involves creating the rhythmic and percussive elements of a music track. This process can vary depending on the genre and personal style of the producer, but here’s a general guide to help you understand the steps involved.
- Understanding the Genre:
- Different genres have distinct rhythmic patterns and sound elements. Before starting, it’s essential to understand the characteristics of the genre you’re working with.
- Selecting Software and Equipment:
- Choose a digital audio workstation (DAW) and any hardware or software instruments you want to use. Popular DAWs include Ableton Live, FL Studio, Logic Pro, and others.
- Setting the BPM (Beats Per Minute):
- Determine the tempo of your beat. This sets the pace of the music and influences the overall feel.
- Creating the Drum Pattern:
- Start by designing the drum pattern. This usually includes kick, snare, hi-hats, and other percussion elements.
- Experiment with different patterns and variations to find a groove that suits your track.
- Layering and Variation:
- Add layers to your drum pattern to make it more interesting. This can involve using multiple sounds for the kick or snare, adding percussion, or incorporating sampled sounds.
- Introduce variations in the drum pattern to keep the beat dynamic. This can include fills, rolls, or changes in intensity.
- Using Samples:
- Many producers use samples, which are pre-recorded audio snippets, to enhance their beats. This can include drum loops, vocal samples, or other sound effects.
- Melodic Elements:
- Depending on the style, you might want to add melodic elements like basslines, chords, or lead instruments. This adds depth and musicality to your beat.
- Arrangement:
- Structure your beat by arranging different sections such as the intro, verse, chorus, and bridge. This will give your beat a sense of progression.
- Mixing:
- Mix and balance the individual elements of your beat to create a polished sound. Adjust levels, pan positions, and apply effects as needed.
- Important: Guys we cannot stress this enough… Make sure that if you are preparing stems [Separate tracks] or even a single stereo track, that your Exports are not distorted or “hot”… aka “Super Loud” 😠… If they are too hot… then the engineer will not be able to work with them, if you are planning to mix and master.
- We tend to keep the master fader lights not hitting higher the [-7 to -9] in the overall track. The standard is [-3 to -5].
- Mastering:
- Mastering involves preparing the final mix for distribution. This includes applying overall EQ, compression, and other processing to enhance the clarity and balance of the entire track.
- Experimentation and Iteration:
- Don’t be afraid to experiment and iterate on your ideas. Making adjustments and trying new things can lead to unique and interesting results.
